Sept. 30th 2009

As I sit here writing, the wind is howling past my back door. It’s so loud I can barely hear people’s voices on my cell phone. As spring comes to the Cape, so do the winds.  Yesterday, as I was walking to a meeting, I had my reading glasses hanging on the front of my shirt. The wind came howling around a building suddenly lifting them off like a pickpocket. They end up landing in the middle of the road and I had to stop traffic just to keep my glasses from being run over! One kind soul stopped his car allowing me to retrieve my glasses and live for another day.

I’m only one week into my time here and I’m already exhausted! I probably need to slow down some but so much is developing so quickly that it’s difficult. This morning I headed off to the Tyger Valley area of the Cape for a radio interview with Xena Massey of 1Africa. (www.1africa.tv) 1Africa Radio is a Christian radio station that broadcasts live via shortwave, satellite and FM/community radio stations all over the continent of Africa. Its mission is to uplift, educate and encourage African youth by focusing on the positive, speaking about integrity and broadcasting a message of hope across borders in a relaxed, fun and relevant way. The 1Africa studios are quite impressive and the staff there wonderful. We decided to shoot video of the interview to be used at a later date on their/our websites. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and found Xena to be not only informed but passionate about her faith. It’s easy to see that she is an up and coming force in South African radio.

From there I went to Wembley Square near where I’m staying to meet with Ann Gibson an ex-pat Zimbabwean who I had never met before today. We were introduced by a mutual friend and had the most marvelous time getting acquainted. It was one of those time stands still moments when you finally look at your watch and 2 hours have passed!  Ann is from Mutare on the eastern Zimbabwe border near Mozambique. She is passionate about her country and believes that God is up to something significant there. I about fell out of my chair when she uttered these words “God has raised you up for such a time as this.” Just a few days earlier my wife Elizabeth had written me to say that those very same words had come to her and I needed to prepare myself. It was all very sobering. As a result of our time, she is calling her network of Zimbabweans here in Cape Town to a meeting and asked me to share my story with them. I will need lots of grace as I will be rushing in from a morning meeting and on my way to a very important afternoon meeting. In my weakness, I will need God to be stronger than ever.

This evening Marcus & Laura picked me up for ice cream! A year ago Laura had won 2 free tickets for shakes at this trendy restaurant here in town. Tonight was the last possible night she could redeem them. Funny thing…though she only won 2 tickets, they sent her 3. I guess I won too!!!
